Selma: The Sejlord Sea Serpent

| 31. July 2020 |

The list of sea monsters and cryptids is an infinite chapter. We come across the tales of exotic sea creatures from centuries ago that still captivate us and dread us a little too.  One of these tales also includes the extravagant Selma sea serpent that has been haunting the Lake Seljordsvatnet, Norway for decades.

The region has reported many sightings since the 1750s describing this reptilian monster as a long anaconda-like snake along with some rumors explaining many humps on its back as well. The size varies within a 30 to 45 feet range. The animal is described as black in color with fin-like feet below the elongated neck and front body.  Another sighting in 1880 stated a mother (Gunhild) and son (Bjorn Bjorge) claimed to have cut the monster in half, where the lower half of its body made an escape back to the water, while the other half stayed ashore.

The fearsome report of another young man, Karl Karlsson in 1918 explained how the monster’s head resembled that of a horse, steading at a fast pace towards him as he was out fishing on a fine morning. Soon after, the monster disappeared as quickly as it had appeared, leaving the waters calm as if nothing had happened.

The most terrifying of all the sightings is the one in 2001 where a father and son from Oslo went to the lake for a swim. From afar, they noticed something long lying on the beach as if some big log. As they approached it, there it was, Selma the serpent in all its glory, unaware of its visitors. At a stumbling noise, the beast turned around and looked right into their eyes, striking fear as it gazed. Soon the enormous serpent body swung back into the lake which was around 30 feet long.

The Lake Seljordsvatnet (Sejlord) has been cautiously approached ever since Selma has been sighted to inhabit it. The photographic and video evidence of the creature shows there is definitely something huge and reptilian in nature that rules that lake and comes to the surfaces whenever it pleases it.

Despite what researches say about the evidence, even just to protect the people of that area, there is no doubt that a horse-like head attached to an enormous serpent body would seem harmless and the locals could sleep peacefully, knowing a dreadful creature has made its home among them.
