Dinosaurs in history existed approximately 65 million years ago on earth. They freely roamed the tresses of the world unhindered by the climate and humans. Even though now they are an extinct species, dinosaurs have been in the limelight for quite some time. Numerous novels have been written on them and many Dino-revival films have been filmed. Central Africa, mainly the Democratic Republic of Congo is believed by many to be home to dinosaurs that are still existent and hidden away from the human race. According to Congo River Basin mythology in central Africa, a water-dwelling entity is said to be found called the Mokele-Mbembe which means “one who stops the flow of rivers”.
Mokele-Mbembe by far is the most celebrated myth of the Congo origin described as a humongous water beast of elephantine bulk. It is said to have a very long neck with an extended tail; a herbivorous beast that prowls in lakes and swaps located deep in the heart of the jungles. Some of these characteristics make it homogenous to the sauropods of the primeval times. Even though characteristically tame, its roar is considered thunderous and aggressive when approached by men. Some people say that it battles and kills elephants with the help of a horn on its head.
Numerous books discuss the existence of the beast. In 1909 author Carl Hagenback in “Beast and Men” introduced the reptilian beasts to the world. The ‘Father of cryptozoology’ Bernard Heuvelmans and his companions started publicizing and promoting the Mokele-Mbembe. After that, the beast started to get highly acclaimed worldwide. Roy Mackals in his book which was published in 1987 talked about the same swamp-dwelling sauropod also giving it the characteristics of a colossal lizard.
More than 50 expeditions have been made to the heart of the forests where its known to live but no substantial evidence of its existence was found. Though, the witnesses still keep swarming in from time to time with their claims of sighting the monster.
The class that believes in the existence of the Mokele-Mbembe believes that rigorous expeditions and dedication of time and resources can lead to the discovery of the beast one day. Some people believe that the Mokele-Mbembe is a novel species waiting to be truly discovered.
Existent or not, the tribes of Congo take pride in the Mokele-Mbembe and do not let anyone hamper their belief.
